“A pioneer of rugby who refused to retire, Tuiā was the oldest active rugby player competing in Senior A competition at the ripe old age of 48 years old. ‘Who said I’m old? The bones may be wearing out but the heart and guts are willing.”
Hearts and guts indeed!
While no longer with us, Tuiā committed his earthly time to serving others – as an avid student to a dedicated family man to a committed politician and of course, as a true rugby constant.
His rugby roots started with Leulumoega Rugby Club in Apia. He then became a player for the Vailoatai Rugby Team, American Samoa wearing #9 as fly-half or #15 as full-back.
He would later move on to coach his beloved Vailoatai Rugby Team. He eventually became a rugby sports administrator and served as President of the Western District Rugby Union.
He negotiated the beginnings of the Pacific Nations Small Island Rugby. His dedication and hard work would lead him to become a member of American Samoa Rugby Union.
He also represented American Samoa in Fiji for the Pacific Rugby Tournament.
Tuiāsina Tu’umai Laumoli passed away years ago but his impact on rugby lives on. He is survived by his wife Liupapa, children, and grandchildren.
